MacFormat_25_Jun._95_1614x1200.pdf
It is June 1995 and, if you want a date for when the beleaguer'd years of Apple began, it is now. Apple has already been skimping on the plastics in machines with the Quadra 800 case (Q800, Q840av, PM 8100/xxx). The Clones are coming out every month but they are high-end machines, not the low-end machines they should have been. Low-price PowerMacs (Performa 5200 & 6200) have been announced that begin the directionless proliferation of models until the Second Coming in two years' time. The very use of the name Performa. I was insulted by it back in 1994.
To quote from page 43, The PowerMacs have only been around for about a year but it's already gelling tricky to keep track of all the different models'.
This issue goes into detail about the Power Macintosh. The 3-ish current models (Power Macintoshes 6100, 7100, 8100) and 2 new models (Performa 5200 & 6200) get a page each to themselves. The advantage of RISC over CISC is explained as are other advantages laid out: integrated FPU, the built-in emulator for 68K code and the faster clock speeds.
A useful section for enthusiasts is the section on upgrading to a PowerMac. The following cards are discussed: DayStar Turbo 601, DayStar PowerCard 601, DayStar PowerPro 601 & the Apple Power Macintosh Upgrade Card. There is even a guide to doing it yourself.
I remember the educational aspects of these magazines to be a strong point. This issue has a couple of starter articles on various topics:
a. How to ... Get Into 3D talks all about rendering , what programs you might use and what a guide to jargon.
b. How to ... Desktop Publish discusses type and how it can used from a graphical perspective.
c. How to Play MIDI Files introduces QuickTime 2, Quicktime Musical Instruments & MIDI.
d. How to ... Use HyperCard has a personal organiser to work with as well as tips & tricks.
e. Basics: Screenshots - How to use Flash-It 3.0.2 - a very useful program (although it saves PICTs).
Although not very relevant today (thank God), there are 7 pages on modems. Many people miss the iconic whistling of modems dialling up. I don't. i was so happy when we finally got ADSL at home.

The magazine was scanned on a Kyocera Taskalfa as a JPEG at the highest level. The images were manually corrected for straightness with the ruler tool and cut to 3500x3497px. The images were then reduced by batch job in Photoshop CS3 to 1614x1200 at 72dpi. The second PDF was made in Acrobat 8 from these 1614x1200 images, while the first PDF was made from the larger images. The second PDF was set to Acrobat 4. In both bookmarks were set and OCR was applied. The final size of the PDF is 98MB for the second PDF and 463MB for the first PDF.
